Why I really love my "job"

This is where the boys and I spent Friday morning.

It all started on Thursday, when Dada was at Rehoboth Beach doing his monthly stint of staring at scantily-clad beach bunnies collecting data for one of his research projects. I was to be alone with the kiddos all day long. He called at around 3:00 and suggested that the beach was too crowded to collect measurements, and he would be staying the night. Then the kicker -- would we like to drive down and stay the night with him? He'd only need to work a few super-early hours Friday morning, and then we could play together until naptime and head home before Jacob got roasted.

Really, that moment was a fantastic one in my stay-at-home-momhood. For this spur-of-the-moment trip, did I have to think twice about how much vacation time I have left, or what kinds of responsibilities or underlings I would be ditching to leave town for a weekday? Nope. All I needed to worry about was how to pack an appropriate number of two different sizes of diapers into my beach-ready backpack. Sweet.

In truth, I let Isaac pick. Stay at home, and watch as many TiVoed episodes of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse as he likes, or go see Daddy at the beach. That boy loves his Daddy. In another moment, one that made me a little teary-eyed, he spotted a picture on the fridge -- one of himself as a baby sitting on Daddy's lap. "It's a picture of Daddy," he announced, and took it off the fridge door. He stopped, thought for a second, and added, "I take this picture with me." He did. He held on to the picture of his Daddy the entire two-hour drive. Even as he slept in his car seat, I could hear the picture crinkling in his hands.

We only played on the beach for three hours, but that was plenty for a family with a baby who's too young to wear sunscreen. Oh, but it was glorious.

Jacob loved going for walks on the beach. Isaac, not so much -- he was a little scared of the waves, and much preferred walking on the boardwalk. But both of them thoroughly enjoyed sleeping on the beach, fanned by a cool ocean breeze, for a whole hour. Even Jacob, whom I coaxed into sleeping on a mattress of sand.

I took that opportunity to get some quality mommy alone-time, and on the beach no less, where I could stroll around and pick up seashells to show Isaac later, or simply stand in the surf and treat my disgusting callouses to nature's pedicure.

Dada has to do this beach-thing every month. Can you say, "Again, again!"?

Aw MAN... we were JUST THERE... wandering the Rehoboh boardwalk a mere two weeks ago.

Also, you are two hours away from the beach? I thought you were much close than that! We are only 2-1/2 hours from Rehoboth... does that mean you live a half hour from me? ;) Because that would rock. I have my EZPASS tag strapped to my car for all the Delaware tolls.... we should juts cruise on up and see ya! ;)
